Internet poker or Live poker Online?
Internet Poker vs. Live PokerI'm not a big fan of Internet gambling, because I think that too many consumers of Internet slots, blackjack, and other Player vs. House games (poker isn't a Player vs. House game; I'll get to poker in a moment) are problem gamblers for whom the Internet has made access easier. In addition to that troubling issue, there is also the potential problem (as yet unproven) that the software of an Internet casino based in an unregulated country could be "cooked," as we say-that is, your Internet blackjack dealer might wind up with an unreasonably high number of good hands. This SHOULDN'T happen, for the same reasons why people shouldn't fear it in regular casinos: the built-in house edge should provide sufficient profit for the house, without any cheating. If a casino did cheat, people would lose too quickly, and take their business elsewhere. But a land-based casino with a multi-million dollar investment has a lot more to lose from a cheating scandal than a cybercasino, so I'm still a bit wary of Player vs. House Internet gaming. Internet sports bettors also encounter a number of problems not found when betting with a regular sports book. You're still playing against the House, and if you start winning too regularly, you may find-as some of my very savvy sports betting friends have found-your bets getting cancelled for strange reasons. I see a lot of Internet sports books marketing themselves by proudly announcing "we pay on time!" Gee, thanks a lot. Why would such marketing statements be necessary, do you think, unless there had been problems with some slow-paying cyber-sports parlors in the past? So, until the Internet "Player vs. House" gaming industry gets one whole heck of a lot better-regulated than it is right now, my advice is "just say no." What about cyber-poker? Poker works differently, both in cyberspace and in real poker rooms. The house doesn't play against the player. The house makes its money by charging the players a fee: sometimes it's an hourly rate, sometimes it's a per-round rate, and sometimes it's a percentage of the pot. In all of these cases, you can see that the House doesn't really mind if you're good (unlike blackjack or sports betting, where being good means being asked to leave), because you aren't winning the House's money. The House's only interest is having a full table, and the more full tables the better. The best way to have full tables is to provide good service, so the interests of the House and the Player/Customer overlap significantly. This is also true in live poker online, so I wouldn't be worried about getting cheated by the House in a cyber-poker game; it could happen, I think, but the operators would have to be morons. The only realistic fear about casino ownership is, are they adequately capitalized to pay you when you win? Even though this shouldn't be a problem-for every player who wins, there has to be one who loses, a very different situation than sports betting-I could envision it, if the operators were undercapitalized or faced losses from other business operations. So, my first advice about cyber-poker is, if you're going to play, make sure you play in a casino whose ownership is either quite wealthy, quite well-known (so they have valuable reputations at stake), or both. (By the way, I don't own stock in, or part of, any casino, cyber or otherwise). There is one major concern for cyber-poker players, related to a common fear in live Poker - partnerships. In live poker games, players always have to be wary about players who pool their resources, in an effort to trap other players. It isn't a question of passing Aces back and forth under the table, but rather partnership play, which works something like this: Players A and C are partners; Player B is just a regular player. Player A bets, B calls, C raises, A raises, and B folds, because he figures that his hand isn't strong enough to play against C, who has raised, and A, who has re-raised. A and C later split up B's money. World-class players aren't too afraid of this sort of thing, because usually they will wait until they have the sort of powerful hand that will bust up A and C. Merely good players worry, but they do have casino personnel on hand to help keep an eye out for this sort of thing, and they also know that the cheating partners have to fear getting the tar beat out of them if the other players discover what's happening. The risks of partnership cheating in cyber-poker increase, for a few reasons. First, the cyber-players don't have to fear physical reprisal; at worst, they'll lose their money. Second, you don't need two players; one player, with two computers, two telephone lines, and two separate accounts, can do it all by himself, and he has the additional advantage of being able to see his "teammate's" hand. How do you protect yourself from this? Like most forms of cheating, a suspicious nature is a good start. If the same two players keep re-raising each other, be wary. They might just be wild players, or something might be happening. But I also think the cybercasino needs to help. They need some sort of appeal and review process, where a player who thinks he's been the victim of sharp practice can press a button and have some casino employee review the hands and the betting. If Player C has made it three bets with 7-2 offsuit, we know what's going on. The cheaters should then be permanently barred (tougher in cyberspace than in real casinos), their accounts frozen, and the losing player should be awarded the pot (or pots) that the cheaters took down. If you can find a cyber-poker situation where the ownership is well capitalized and where there is an effective review process, I'd say you're probably as safe playing cyber-poker as the live version. I do not endorse (explicitly or implicitly) any particular cyber-poker room, so don't write asking for recommendations. For people who don't live within an easy drive of live poker rooms, you're probably better off (financially) than you are in private games, where cheating can REALLY get serious, and which can be hijacked (robbed).

Live Poker Online Overview
An often overlooked aspect of Live Poker Online Penny Slots is the abundance of creative themes. Each online casino boasts of their diverse reel options and betting ranges, but often the unique themes and graphics are only mentioned in passing. It is time to really consider and celebrate these artistic creations. For instance, if you play a penny slot with a western theme, just who do you imagine yourself to be as you hope for lines of matching cowboy boots and spurs, pistols and ten gallon hats? Are you the good guy, a handsome sharpshooter dressed in white? Perhaps you are the villain, fingering your handlebar mustache and opening one eye widely. You could even be the inoffensive saloon keeper, slightly overweight, but friendly and full of bar stool wisdom. Hell, you could even be the whore. Fun With Online Penny SlotsIt is completely up to you to flex your imagination, and flex it you must. Do not just automatically pull the lever, or in this case click your mouse, without a second thought to your character or place in the imaginary world before you. Participate actively in the theme of your slot machine. Scowl as you click that mouse, and imagine yourself pulling the trigger of your faithful six-shooter. Do not just hope for matching graphics without a second thought to your “real†objective. If you are trying to “crack the safe,†then you need to focus on breaking that lock, on cracking that code. Concentrate as you click your mouse, sweat profusely, and you should probably be wearing a sweat suit with a hoodie and dark sunglasses. If you are looking to find pirates’ treasure, let out a loud “arrgh†while your reel spins, and if you don’t have an eye patch you can just close one eye and pretend. Themed Penny SlotsEven the more conventional themes can push the limits with enough applied imagination and creativity. Ring that bell, pick that cherry, and great things will happen. Some people might tell you that there is no way to increase your odds of winning at penny slot machines. This may be true if you only consider winning as making money, but if you consider winning as living out your wildest fantasies, then we can all be winners with a little creative effort.

Live poker online there days.
Bankroll Requirements for Playing Live by Roy Cooke You can probably guess what my answer to CC was: It depends! For starters, I believe that anybody who’s beginning to play poker for a living or is making a step up in limits needs six months’ living expenses on hand. With a $3,500 monthly nut, CC needs to have 21K. This will ensure that he isn’t too personally affected by any swings, and won’t vary his play based on how he’s running because he’s worried about his bills. If you have to worry about whether you’re going to have the rent on the first of the month, you might play too tight to protect against losses, or too loose, trying to press to make things happen. You always want to have enough money on hand so that your living situation is not affected by your immediate results, and doesn’t affect your poker decisions. This six months’ living expenses is not part of your bankroll; it’s your security. One variable affecting CC’s bankroll is playing style. If you have a style that presses marginal edges and/or tries to create big volume situations, you’re going to have bigger swings and will need a bigger bankroll. Also, how well do you handicap yourself against your opponents? Are you honest about your edge against the field, and are you willing to forego the bigger game for the smaller game when your edge in the bigger game isn’t sufficient? Many a time I’ve passed a $40-$80 game for a $30-$60 game, or a $30-$60 for a $20-$40 or even a $15-$30, because the lineup in the bigger game was terrible and wasn’t worth playing. If your ego won’t let you step down when the situation dictates, you’re going to need a bigger bankroll. Like me, CC is something of a grinder. In all of my years of playing, I have never had a 200 big-bet slide. That is because of my playing style, which is one that does not generally push marginal situations, and because I am very selective of games, selecting those in which my edge over my opponents is large. Those factors make my game very swing-resistant. I recognize, though, that many people do suffer such slides, and play in games or have styles that result in more chips being risked. This results in potentially greater downswings and, therefore, larger bankroll requirements. Whenever I have experienced my biggest downswings, analysis after the fact has always indicated that something in my life has affected my decision-making and I haven’t been playing my best. Variance and fluctuation will dictate many of your swings, but more of them than most players want to admit come from within themselves. My advice to CC was that he really ought to have 200 big bets — 16K — in his playing bankroll before stepping up. Combined with his living expenses, this means that he needs 37K on hand before making his move. If he suffers a downswing of half of his bankroll — 100 big bets, 8K — he should step down, take some time to reevaluate, and build his bankroll back up. If CC played a faster style, pressing smaller edges, I would recommend that he go up to 300 big bets as a playing bankroll. I also suggested that he accurately but conservatively determine his expected hourly rate and pay himself for the number of hours he plays once a week, like a paycheck. He should not take all of his hourly rate, but a percentage of it, and keep the remainder in his bankroll to build security and future opportunities. That will enable him to have a stable life and to rely on poker, instead of being subject to the short-term whims of chance in his daily life decisions. It is very important that he not fool himself about what his hourly expectation is, and he must err on the conservative side when he makes this decision. Eventually over time, he should be adding money to his bankroll. If and when his bankroll doubles to 32K, he can cash out the overage, spend some on a good time, and hopefully invest some to help build financial security outside poker. Continue this process: If your bankroll is depleted by half (including what you have paid yourself hourly for your work), step down. If it doubles, withdraw and invest. That is a way to build a life out of the game. Internet games get all of the attention and most of the action these days, but live poker online is enjoying its own renaissance, feeding off the TV and Internet boom. The MGM recently opened a poker room. The Mirage took out the keno game and put back the poker tables. Bellagio’s poker room just underwent a major remodeling project. And, of course, Steve Wynn’s new property just opened with a luxurious 27-table room and a smiling, affable Daniel Negreanu as its poker ambassador. I recently spent a day checking out some of the new facilities and playing a little live poker for a change of pace (most of my play is on the Internet these days). I went to both Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas and was happy as a clam with what I saw. Both rooms are beautiful, comfortable places in which to play. Both are in casinos that cater to high-end tourists, folks who tend to like to play higher stakes and make the quality of the games very good. I think Las Vegas poker is going to do very well with its upgrades. If I were going to give CC some more advice, I’d suggest that he visit Vegas from time to time, be careful in his game selection, and pick off some of the cherry spots at these great new rooms. They certainly create some great potential for working poker players. And they are classy joints for the casual player, as well. Hourly rate and bankroll requirements are important considerations for those who wish to make a living at the game. Assessing your needs, whether making the break from the working world or stepping up in limits, is an important part of the process. CC is on the right track here. I suspect that CC will do fine in stepping up — but I think he’s making one important mistake. He’s ignoring the Internet. If you want to put yourself in the best earning situations as a working pro, the Web just has to be part of your game these days. From a pure earnings perspective, it is probably easier to make a living at only Internet play than it is at only live play — although I think both should be a part of any serious player’s business plan. For many reasons, including the nature of the field, the number of hands played per hour, and multitable possibilities, determining bankroll requirements for playing on the Web is quite a different proposition than CC’s. But that is a column for another day.

Live Poker Online Tips
Online Poker Tells
The main disadvantage of playing Live poker online is the inability to see your opponent, limiting your ability to see poker tells. Tells are simply things that your opponent does that help you determine the strength of his cards. There are several good poker tells that you can use when playing poker online. Your opponents going on tilt
Going on tilt simply means playing poorly after taking a few big losses. You will find poker players on tilt in every online cardroom, at every playing level. A big time tell of someone about to go on tilt is when they show their cards after losing a hand, basically stating: "I had you all the way until you got lucky on the river". They will often make chat statements like: "Nice catch", or even say things like "Why were you in that hand?" Poker players who are on tilt can play you a lot of money, as they will be playing poor hands, and raising without merit. Punish your opponents who go on tilt, and watch for them. Take advantage of players who let their emotions get the better of them, turning a bad situation into a worse one. Beware of the "Auto Buttons".When you bet into someone, and they immediately raise you, chances are they have used an auto button. AVOID AUTO BUTTONS! People who are bluffing (especially early in a hand) will almost NEVER use an auto-button. When you see someone using the 'raise' auto button, you can easily fold your marginal hands, as they will almost always have you beat. Players taking a long time to decidePay attention to this one, as it happens all the time, especially in no-limit and pot-limit games. If your opponent takes a long time to call a bet, he usually has a marginal hand. If he takes a long time, and then bets or raises, he almost always has a very strong hand. Often people with the 'nuts' (The best possible starting hand) will delay their bet in an attempt to look weak. Don't fall for this. If they delay then call, they are usually weak or marginal. If they delay then bet, they are usually very strong Very quick calls and very quick betsAnother interesting thing about online poker is that you can learn a lot about your opponent by watching how much time he takes to bet or call. Please note, I am not talking about an instantaneous call, with an auto-button, I am calling about a quick call or bet, within a second or two of the previous player acting. When someone quickly calls, it means one of two things. Either they have a good draw they are not going to fold until the river, or they think you are bluffing, and have a medium to weak hand. Quickly calling is an attempt to get you (or whoever) to stop betting. Its just like in real life poker, when someone is holding the chips above the pot, just waiting for you to bet, so he can quickly call. This is a sign of weakness, and you should continue betting if you think you have the best hand. Quick betting is also a sign of weakness. This isn't as reliable as the quick calling, but I have found that when I bluff, I tend to bet quickly, making it look like I used my autobutton. Avoid tells yourselfIt is fairly easy to avoid giving anything away online, but you would be surprised how many people don't think that they can give any tells online. Here are a few things to keep in mind when playing poker online, to avoid giving any information away to your opponents: 1. Never Use Auto buttons 2. Try to take the same time between bets/calls/raises every time. 3. Find a standard way of 'chatting' online, use a simple nh to indicate a nice hand for your opponent, and ty to indicate thank you. 4. Don't discuss strategy while playing.
